2 Day K'gari 4WD Beach House Adventure (Ex Hervey Bay) runs through Fraser Dingo 4wd Adventures. Rated 4.8 across 245 reviews. Runs 2 days. From A$659.

Overview

This two-day trip from Hervey Bay puts travellers behind the wheel of a 4WD on K'gari, following an experienced guide in a convoy across the world's largest sand island. No off-road experience is needed, and driving is optional: anyone who prefers can ride as a passenger instead. The route covers the eastern beach, the Maheno Shipwreck, the clear water of Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), Pile Valley rainforest and the freshwater current of Eli Creek.

The difference from most K'gari tag-along tours is the night. Instead of camping, the group stays in a beach house on the island's eastern side, with hot showers, running water, a communal deck and a freshly prepared dinner. Rooms are quad-share, sleeping between three and five people, with bed linen provided. Same-gender room options and keeping groups together are offered where possible, but there are no private rooms or upgrades.

Meals are largely covered: two lunches, one dinner, one breakfast and snacks, with dietary needs catered for at extra cost in some cases. Return ferry transfers, National Park fees, the vehicles and the guide are all included. Pickup runs from select Hervey Bay hostels from 7:00 am, or travellers can meet at the office at 7:15 am. It suits people who want the driving adventure without carrying camping gear, and who are happy sharing rooms and vehicles with others.

What To Expect From The Tour

A few practical points will shape whether this tour is the right fit and how to prepare for it.

Common issues. The shared rooms and shared vehicles will not suit travellers wanting privacy, and there are no room upgrades. Some reviewers felt the meal variety and portions could be improved, and certain dietary options cost extra. Secure car storage is not included and starts at $20 per day, though free street parking exists. Bag storage between $10 and $20 per bag applies if a travel bag cannot come along. One reviewer noted the toughest tracks, which is worth knowing for nervous passengers, though driving itself is optional.

Before You Book Anything

What is included in the price?

Beach house accommodation in shared rooms, two lunches, one dinner, one breakfast and snacks, return ferry transfers, the 4WDs, National Park fees, an experienced guide and all local charges. Pickup from select Hervey Bay hostels and free street car parking are also included.

Is food extra?

Most meals are included, but gluten free, lactose free and vegan options cost $5 per day. Some travellers have also felt the meal variety and portions could be better, so bringing snacks, as the packing list suggests, is a reasonable idea.

Where does the tour pick up from?

Free pickup runs from Hervey's, Flashpackers, Woolshed Eco, Colonial Village Resort and Kondari in Hervey Bay from 7:00 am. Otherwise, meet at the operator's office at 7:15 am. Pickup from hostels and hotels not listed is not included.

Do I have to drive the 4WD?

No. Driving is optional and travellers can come as passengers. Anyone who does drive must be 21 or over with an open licence and two or more years of driving experience, attend the morning safety briefing, and place a $2,500 security bond or pay $50 to reduce the excess to $0.

What is the cancellation policy?

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. A full refund is also provided if the operator cancels the activity, or if the rescheduling dates offered for bad weather do not suit you.

Can I bring a suitcase or my pet?

No. Large bags and oversize luggage are not allowed on the tour, though bag storage is available for $10 to $20 per bag. Pets, weapons or sharp objects, glass, fishing gear, alcohol in the vehicle, smoking indoors and touching or feeding animals are also prohibited.
